This is an intimate performance by a master of the kora, certainly one of the world's most beautiful stringed instruments. The main instrument of a Griot or Jaliba, it is used as an accompaniment to narration and songs (often improvised) honoring great patrons and recounting historical events. Salieu Suso is a Mandinka Griot from Gambia, West Africa. He learned to play the kora when he was eight and began his professional career at 15. Since then he has traveled extensively, promoting Gambian music and the repertoire of the kora.

Liner notes detail the narratives (in English), but the music effortlessly and inevitably guides the listener to a spiritual level."—Daily Californian
