Out of print for 30 years, these are the first two albums by an iconic American singer. A Maid of Constant Sorrow from 1961 features straight-ahead folk tunes like “The Prickilie Bush,” “Tim Evans,” “John Riley,” “Sailor’s Life,” “The Rising of the Moon,” “I Know Where I’m Going,” “Wars of Germany,” and “Wild Mountain Thyme” (the latter’s soaring high notes presaging things to come). “I See the Moon” is a bonus track from that era. On 1962’s Golden Apples of the Sun Collins sings a gospel-tinged “Twelve Gates to the City,” “Fannerio,” “Crow on the Cradle,” an a cappella “Christ Child Lullaby,” “Great Selchie of Shule Skerry,” “Shule Aroon,” and more. “Floods the memory with smoky coffee houses and campus ‘hoots.’ Collins sang at the Golden Vanity in Boston and Gerde’s Folk City in New York…. Collins, like Joan Baez, turns the everyday into the extraordinaire with her vibrant delivery…. Revival fans, Collins’ fans, and anyone who enjoys beautifully sung ballads, will want to grab a copy.”—All Music Guide “If amethysts could sing ... they would sound like Judy Collins.”—Richard Farina
