Ravel's sensuous ballet score for Daphnis et Chloé, commissioned by Diaghilev in 1912, is symphonic in scope, with choral parts as well. Paired with the hypnotic tour de force Boléro is the orchestral version of Alborada del Gracioso ("The Jester's Morning Serenade"), the fourth part of Ravel's Miroirs for piano. The use of percussion and pizzicatto strings is particularly striking in what has become a concert staple.
"Abbado's feeling for the music's atmosphere is matched by his care for detail."—Penguin Guide
