In the summer of 2010, photographer Brandon Stanton set out on an ambitious project: to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City. The result of these efforts is the wildly popular blog he called "Humans of New York" (or HONY), in which his street photos are featured alongside quotes by and anecdotes about the subjects, and which now boasts more than a million regular followers. This book is a remarkable gallery of 400 of his favorite images—from an orange-turbaned Sikh with an elegant mustache to ballet students striking a pose in a steam-grate cloud, and a young man preparing to smuggle himself into his girlfriend's dorm in a suitcase. Some are nearly captionless here, identified only by location; others seem to profess their whole life philosophy in the moment; and some already know what HONY is, and are clearly pleased to be a part of it.

"A lovely collection of photos and essays.... The images are gorgeous, and the effect is like walking through a version of our city where startlingly honest thought bubbles appear over everyone's heads."—New York Magazine

"Visually arresting and disarmingly deep.... The photographs in this volume, some of which have never been published before, capture the city's inhabitants with a commendable eye for demographic diversity and everyday street fashion. But it's Stanton's interviews with his subjects, usually excerpted from their rawest moments, that are the most captivating as they highlight both the hardship and the little victories of an often-unforgiving city."—Atlantic

"Some street photographers hide behind phone booths like paparazzi so their subject won't be aware of their presence, but for Stanton it's precisely that awkward interaction, the tearing down of the wall between strangers, that he covets."—Huffington Post
