Simply stunning—this is the art of John James Audubon in vibrant and subtly colored prints that in some cases fill the 13 1/2 x 20 1/2–inch page. The illustrations that Audubon produced for the double elephant folio Birds of America are some of the most widely recognized and collected artworks in American history, and the book has been reproduced in many forms. After Audubon's death, his sons had New York printer Julius Bien produce a new edition using the recently developed chromolithographic process; the venture was abruptly ended by the Civil War, however, and the plates that were completed are among the rarest of Audubon prints. All 150 of these images are collected in this gorgeously printed book, bound in cloth with a full cloth slipcase—the first complete reproduction of the Bien chromolithographs.
