Description
One of the all-time trumpet greats and one of jazz's most innovative composers, Miles Davis also had some very talented friends—two tracks on this nine-track compilation feature fellow bop pioneer Charlie Parker (the ballad "Embraceable You" and the upbeat "Scrapple from the Apple"). Other featured selections include "So What," "Walking," and "No Blues," while the trumpeter works out on Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" and the 20's tune "Bye, Bye Blackbird," as well as bringing rapt lyricism to Cole Porter's 1954 standard, "All of You."

"Davis's Kind of Blue is of course one of the landmarks of modern music. More people have heard it than any other jazz record, and its five pieces of music are amongst the most ubiquitous in jazz. 'So What' opens the album, and it's arguably its most distinctive piece. With a long introduction from bassist Paul Chambers culminating in Davis' quintessential modal, minimalist solo, 'So What' has become something of a blueprint for all modal jazz. Indeed, the track is so laid back, thanks mostly to Jimmy Cobb's drumming, that it's the very essence of 'cool jazz'. The rhythmic style is very free, and although the structure is simple, it reveals new complexities and subtleties in each listen."—All Music Guide
