Description
On September 7, 1940—Black Saturday—London's East End took the first aerial assault of the Blitz, and the capital was pounded for 57 consecutive nights. The tightly packed homes, pubs, shops, and markets in the East End docks were particularly hard hit, and then again in 1944 as V1 and then V2 bombs began to fall. Surviving East Enders reveal the real horrors of the war here, from June Guiver's memory of a Jewish neighbor, who thought Hitler was invading and threw herself from the roof, to children who had been in the Bethnal Green Tube disaster, where 173 people were crushed to death in a panic on the stairs. Journalist and social historian Andrew Bissell gathers harrowing recollections from the citizens who endured their world exploding around them. The book is heavily illustrated throughout with archival photos and personal snapshots.
