Gioseffo Zarlino succeeded Cipriano de Rore as maestro di capella at Venice's San Marco Cathedral in 1555; he remained there writing sacred and secular motets as well as madrigals until his death in 1590. This disc's masterpiece is a group of 10 motets that comprise a continuous musical setting of the biblical Canticum Canticorum Salomonis (Song of Songs of Solomon), in the Latin translation of Renaissance Hebrew scholar Isidoro Chiari.
"On this superb first full-length recording … each motet gradually moves stepwise through the eight modes as it progresses through Chiari's text. Highly recommended."—All Music Guide
"A notable discovery. Cristle Collins Judd, whose edition of Zarlino's 1549 motets has just been published, wrote an illuminating annotation…. In the midst of much newly discovered music on records, this is a presentation of outstanding merit."—American Record Guide
