| Description |

|
Shostakovich had a youthful passion for playing the piano, excitedly experimenting with his own compositions and even landing a job accompanying silent films. He shone as a soloist, concertizing successfully with Beethoven and the Romantics and even dabbling in some Stravinsky, but he eventually played only his own works in public. In these mid-1960s recordings, the composer’s virtuoso qualities come to the fore in his quick, decisive handling of his two piano concertos. In the 1944 Piano Trio, he, Oistrakh, and Sadlo outdo each other in élan, and the melodious Concertino Op. 94, performed with his son Maxim, is light and delightful in the extreme. “The composer’s recordings [of the Second Piano Trio] are incomparable in the finale, in creating a sense of doomed momentum and in sustaining it past the obvious climax until the music seems out of its mind with intensity and can only blow itself apart.”—Gramophone
