Description
Shostakovich‘s lighthearted Cello Concerto No. 1 reflects the joie de vivre of its dedicatee, also the composer’s closest friend. The late Mstislav Rostropovich renders it magnificently in this 1965 performance, conducted memorably by David Oistrakh. The cellist's warmth and expressiveness in the somewhat mysterious Moderato would melt an iceberg. And as regards virtuosity, the ensuing Cadenza is Exhibit A. The second, more pensive Cello Concerto of 1966 was again dedicated to “Slava.” It is a lingering piece, with many melodious legatos and unhurried passages—even in the Scherzo. The humorous and satirical Five Romances for Soprano and Piano was a gift to Slava and his wife, celebrated soprano Galina Vishnevskaya. At the premiere they had to encore the work twice; even without texts one can appreciate why.

“Oistrakh is … poetically responsive: his handling of the First Concerto's moderato is especially lyrical…. The only rival who equals Oistrakh at this point is Maxim Shostakovich…. Rostropovich himself is on top form throughout (he was at the very height of his powers during the 1960s).”—Gramophone

“The opening movement is attacked with dazzling fury….The cadenza maintains rapt concentration, before plunging into the final movement, which is as impetuous as the first…. You won't find a more exciting reading on disc. The Second Cello Concerto, from November 1967, is even easier to recommend. Rostropovich's command is secure at all times, and Oistrakh fully exploits the sombre undercurrents and mechanical juddering of the orchestral writing.”—DSCH Journal
