The most influential group in country music history, the Carter Family switched the emphasis from hillbilly instrumentals to vocals, made dozens of their songs part of the standard country music canon, and established a style of guitar playing that became the dominant technique for decades. The group began in the locale of Maces Springs (near Clinch Mountain, Virginia) when A.P. Carter married Sara Dougherty in 1915. Both were old hands at singing and playing folk songs at church events and family gatherings. Soon they were joined by Sara's guitar playing, harmony-singing cousin, Maybelle Addington (who married A.P.'s younger brother), and the rest was history. Following a long period on the road and appearances on the radio, A.P., Sara, and Maybelle signed a recording deal in 1928, the fruits of which led to the classic recordings on this set. They include “Keep on the Sunny Side,” “Little Darling Pal of Mine,” “Wildwood Flower,” “My Clinch Mountain Home,” “Lula Walls,” “The Foggy Mountain Top,” “Wabash Cannonball,” “Worried Man Blues,” “Lonesome Valley,” “Church in the Wildwood,” “My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains,” and “No Depression in Heaven.”
