In Asbury Park, New Jersey, in 1981, Jeff Mermelstein took his camera on a quest for taffy-rich colors and seedy atmospheres. Mermelstein was mesmerized by the sights: a pink lady at a baby parade; a startled bag lady dressed in red; a cat show judge named Mr. Friend. His trips to Asbury Park grew to encompass an ever-widening spectrum of American real life, including street life, trade shows, wedding parties, grand openings, celebrity appearances and nearly anything jarring, disjointed, or surreal in some moments. Here a woman in an evening gown holds a glass of wine and a small chicken; Richard Simmons startles a 70-something mallgoer; and Zippy the chimp is caught reading a men's magazine.
