Jeu de cartes ("The Card Party") was commissioned for George Balanchine's American Ballet. In its helter skelter of melodic ideas, musical quotations come from Stravinsky's own works, as well as those of Delibes, Rossini, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Ravel—giving the piece a sense of familiarity that suddenly leads to new surprises. Le baiser de la fée ("The Fairy's Kiss") of 1928 is an allegorical ballet in four scenes, composed as an homage to the music and dance of late Romanticism, and the influence of Tchaikovsky is pervasive.
