Celebrated on the PBS program American Masters, this Grammy-winning ensemble of six African-American women marked its 30th anniversary with this a cappella CD. Characteristically, it makes a joyful noise while being a clarion call for social change. Sometimes accompanied with hand-held percussion instruments, the ensemble draws on spirituals, hymns, gospel, blues, jazz, rap, hip-hop, and traditional West African songs. The song that gave them their name was based on a religious parable describing a land so rich that when rocks were cracked open, honey flowed from them. That was their image of the African-American woman—sweet as honey but strong as a rock.
