|
Filmed on location in Paris and garnering four Academy Award nominations, this 1957 George and Ira Gershwin musical features Fred Astaire at the pinnacle of his career and Audrey Hepburn at the beginning of hers, singing and dancing to such songs as "'S Wonderful," "Funny Face," and "He Loves and She Loves." Astaire plays a Richard Avedon–style fashion photographer (Avedon actually designed the opening titles) who is seeking a new "look"—both beautiful and intellectual. He finds this new look in bookshop clerk Jo (Hepburn) and convinces her to come to Paris where, of course, they fall in love. Hepburn's Bohemian-style dance in a black cat suit is one of her best-known screen bits, while Eloise creator Kay Thompson gives a rare and delightful on-camera performance as a fashion publisher.
