It took four years, 88,000 tons of steel and concrete, and the strenuous effort of thousands of workers to build what was in 1937 the largest suspension bridge in the world. Designed by Joseph Strauss, the Golden Gate Bridge linked a rapidly growing San Francisco to communities north of the bay that had been underserved by ferry transport. This program tells the story behind the construction of this iconic bridge and relates how, in the absence of government funding, the people of San Francisco put up their homes, farms, and businesses to help pay for the immense project.
