Herman Broder (Ron Silver) is a Holocaust survivor in postwar New York, wed out of gratitude to the Polish peasant woman (Margaret Sophie Stein) who hid him from the Nazis. He carries on a mad affair with a concentration camp survivor (New York Film Critics Best Supporting Actress Lena Olin), only to find out that the snappish wife (National Society of Film Critics Best Supporting Actress Anjelica Huston) that he thought had died in the war is miraculously alive. The 1989 movie is based on Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer's novel and won the New York Film Critics Best Director Award for Paul Mazursky.
