Introducing Quantum Theory: A Graphic Guide

Introducing Quantum Theory: A Graphic Guide

Notoriously difficult to understand, quantum theory is nonetheless an awe-inspiring intellectual adventure, and described here with clarity and wit. Offering illustrations, diagrams, and "talking head" cartoons on nearly every page, this pocketable digest introduces the subject in highly visual terms, exploring knotty problems and giving us a peek inside the minds of pioneering scientists like Planck, Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg and Schrödinger. Why is it that so many children react with wonder when exploring the natural world? It seems that, even more than "who" or "when," we're born wanting to know "how" and "why."

Yet every day it seems another research effort is de-funded or an oversight agency is threatened with dismantling, while credible warnings from the scientific community are discounted or discredited. Science is also held up as a villain by organizations that seek to dilute the influence of scientific evidence in education and policymaking. In short, science is under attack in the current political climate, despite its vital role in our health, education, safety, economy, and government.

April 22, Earth Day, also marks the inaugural March for Science in Washington, D.C., and hundreds of other locations—the first step in a global movement to recognize that honest scientific inquiry and exploration are essential to our selves, our civilization, and our planet. These things have always been important to us here at Daedalus, so in support of this initiative we've assembled some our favorite science and nature books, histories and biographies of important scientists, explorations of significant new findings, and sociological studies, as well as documentary productions on DVD.
