It has been the backdrop for some of history's greatest dramas, and was the birthplace of literature's greatest dramatist; it was once the seat of the world's mightiest empire and the most populous city on the planet, while the list of historical figures, notable personalities, and literary, artistic, musical, and dramatic talents who have called it home is simply staggering.
