Denmark's Joachim Andersen was a spectacular flutist who flourished in the 1880s. In his adaptations of Isidor Dannström's Swedish Polka-Songs and in his fantasy on Mozart's Don Giovanni, Andersen recast popular music into charming new creations. Andersen's own musical miniatures and studies (Acht Vortragesstücke [Eight Performance Pieces], Deuxième morceau de concert, and op. 15 Etudes) gained him worldwide fame. Also included here, Cesare Ciardi's best-known composition, Le carnaval russe, is a set of virtuoso variations featuring cadenzas by Andersen. The principal flutist of the Peoria Symphony and the author of a biography of the composer, Kyle Dzapo is clearly in his element on these recordings.
