Part of the New York School of mid-20th-century abstract expressionism, Richard Pousette-Dart's (1916–92) art was distinguished by its spiritual content and his elaborate layering of materials. Generously illustrated with more than 100 color images, this book highlights the artist's works on paper, which are remarkable for their varied use of graphite, acrylic, and watercolor. Here are Pousette-Dart's Bird and Fish and other charming, stylized works from the 1930s, alongside such structured yet free-spirited works of his maturity as Heart of the Jewel. In his later career, Pousette-Dart experimented with pointillism, and as seen here, the results are striking.
