Leaving Beijing, retired widower Mr. Shi (Henry O) travels to Spokane, Washington, to visit his daughter Yilan (Faye Yu), who is still recovering from a bitter divorce. Much as Shi wants to counsel Yilan, the cultural and generational gap between them will either lead to estrangement, or a chance at reconciliation. And, as Shi forges a friendship with a Persian woman (Vida Ghahremani) at the local park, he begins to wonder what his own future holds. Much as he did with The Joy Luck Club, Wayne Wang brings poignancy and realism to this 2007 drama—in English and Mandarin with English subtitles—based on Yiyun Li's award-winning book of short stories by the same title.
