Tormented by his failure to produce a world-class athlete, German-born running coach Barry Bohmer (Armin Mueller-Stahl) takes a job at a South African brick factory, but soon loses his spot to a local man. Adrift, Bohmer begins to hope again when he discovers Namibian immigrant Christine (Nthati Moshesh), an unmistakably gifted runner. To save Christine from deportation, Bohmer lets her move in with him, and he begins to train her rigorously; in this 2001 film, Christine will find out if she has what it takes to complete the most grueling race in the world, the 56-mile Comrades Marathon.
