We were quite fortunate to have obtained a number of this remarkable album of atmospheric images and descriptions from preservationist and photographer Monica Randall. First published over 20 years ago, it is a collection of sepia portraits profiling more than two dozen palatial estates that once loomed over New York's Hudson River—many of them captured shortly before they were demolished. Rather than an architectural study, however, Randall offers an impressionistic tour of these once-grand residences as the haunted mansions they became, complete with ghost stories and Randall's own appearance in several images as an Edwardian spirit.
