Best known as a Pritzker Prize-winning military historian, Max Hastings is also a devoted outdoorsman willing to travel any distance for a memorable encounter with nature. In this selection of gentle, contemplative musings, Hastings shares some of his favorite rural moments: tramping the snipe bogs of Waterford; dogging hedges in Hampshire and moors in Sutherland; casting a fly from Scotland to Iceland and Alaska; and shooting in India and the west of Ireland. Combining a journalist's knack for storytelling with the enthusiasm of the dedicated amateur, Hasting's 1989 book is an affectionate homage to Victorian sporting memoirs, and it features line drawings by William Geldart.
