Living in a rural corner of Yorkshire, siblings Cathy and Daniel roamed the woods freely, occasionally visiting a local woman for schooling, living outside all conventions. Their father works with his hands and hunts; sometimes he would disappear, forced to do secret, brutal work for money. In Fiona Mozley's debut—a Man Booker Prize finalist—a local landowner shows up on their doorstep, threatening their precarious existence. Fierce and unyielding, Cathy and her father set out to protect themselves and their neighbors, setting in motion a chain of events that can only end in violence.
