Over the centuries, there have been many outstanding scientific and artistic depictions of plants, but the artists' preparatory sketches, first impressions, and scribbled notes on paper are rarely seen. Culled from the collections of collections of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Kew Library, this exquisite visual compendium of botanical sketches by 80 artists from around the world include Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer, Carl Linnaeus, Beatrix Potter, Maria Sibylla Merian, John Muir, Edward Lear, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Many of these illustrations are akin to personal journals, and offer unexpected insights into these noted scientists and inspired amateurs.
