In 1799, Justy Flanagan—lawyer, soldier, policeman—returns to his native New York City, battered after fighting for four years in the Irish Rebellion against the English. Determined to hunt down the man who killed his father, Flanagan follows the trail to Wall Street, where the fledgling stock market is still recovering from a massive fraud. Someone has been killing young slave women in the area, and soon Flanagan connects these murders and that of his father. As he digs deeper into the links between these deaths and financial panic, Flanagan may have to choose between honoring his father's memory and unmasking a conspiracy that threatens the stability of the young American republic.
