Since 1919, as libraries were becoming an essential part of U.S. citizenship, Children's Book Week has been an annual celebration of literacy and the pleasures of reading. The posters commissioned each year by the Children's Book Council not only chronicle our national effort to educate the young, they also reflect the work of our finest illustrators and visual storytellers, from Jessie Wilcox Smith through N.C.Wyeth, Garth Williams, Richard Scarry, Maurice Sendak, and Chris Van Allsburg. Literary historian Leonard Marcus's earlier catalog brought us up to 1994 and Jerry Pinkney; here we also meet more recent artists like Kevin Henkes, Lane Smith, David Wiesner, Peter Sís, and Grace Lee, each one profiled alongside his or her distinctive poster.
