Much as we may associate the Mennonites with Pennsylvania or the Midwest, they have a worldwide presence, the result of centuries of migration. Tracking this process through one family line, anthropologist Arlette Kouwenhoven describes the incredible journey of 15 generations of the Fehrs/DeFehrs in their search for the ultimate place to practice their Mennonite faith. As Kouwenhoven recounts, the journey begins in 16th-century Amsterdam with Gijsbert de Veer, proceeds to Danzig, the Polish Werder, the Russian steppes, the Canadian prairies, and ends in present-day Mexico.
