Fifteen years ago in Göteborg, Sweden, 11-year-old Sophie Mamborg's stepfather died in a fire. When Detective Inspector Irene Huss and case workers arrived, however, the strange and aloof young ballerina refused to talk to them. Now an adult, Sophie has disappeared, and the charred remains of a dancer are found in an abandoned warehouse. Making her sixth investigation (after The Golden Calf), Irene has a startling realization that could shed light on the case that has been lingering in the back of her mind since the beginning of her career on the police force—but these crimes may have more twists and turns than even she expected.
