In 1940s Hollywood, director Theodore Langley is in big trouble when his lead actress Eleanor Hayes is found dead in his rose garden. Although the case is thrown out before it went to trial, Langley flees his L.A. estate Windhall and disappears. Decades later, investigative journalist Max Hailey longs to prove Langley's guilt, and when a copycat murder takes place near Windhall, the long reclusive director returns to L.A., and it seems Hailey finally has his chance. Discovering Langley's final film—the unreleased Last Train to Avalon—Hailey senses that vital clue to the crime may be there, but now he must race to piece together the murders of the past and present before it's too late.
