Just out of Greenhaven after a five-year homicide stint, artist Sam Tabor comes to Bill Smith with a strange request. Smith is convinced that since he's been out, he has killed two women. An alcoholic with a history of mental illness, he doesn't remember the killings but he wants Smith, one of the few people he trusts, to investigate and prove him either innocent or guilty. But in this sixth outing (after Paper Son), Smith doesn't think that adds up to serial killer, and he enlists fellow P.I. Lydia Chin to help prove it. Wading into the contemporary art world, the duo will contend with artists, collectors, and two NYPD detectives, even as more bodies turn up.
