Humans have long sought two ideals that don't coexist easily. We value our freedom, our individuality and self-reliance, yet we utterly rely on community for safety and support. The author of The Perfect Storm, Fire, War, and Tribe, Sebastian Junger considered those conflicting impulses during the 400 mile trek he took along with three compatriots from the war in Afghanistan (which they filmed for the documentary The Last Patrol). Walking rail lines from Washington to Philadelphia to Pittsburg while dodging railroad cops, sleeping under bridges, cooking over fires and drinking from creeks, the four men forged a strong reliance on one another, and Junger incisively reflects on our struggles of personal autonomy versus interdependence.
