Widely known as a painter of women in the Japanese ukiyo-e style at the turn of the 19th century, Yamaguchi Soken was particularly talented in rendering scenes from everyday life with a great degree of realism, through direct observation of his subjects. The four images decorating the twenty notecards in this assortment are all panels from his series Beauties, at the Clark Center of Japanese Art and Culture.
