Much as it might seem like human teenagers are uniquely preoccupied with status, sex, and self-reliance, this phase of life between childhood and adulthood plays out the same way across the animal kingdom. Traveling around the world, the authors of Zoobiquity trace this idea in the lives of four animals in the wild: Ursula, a young penguin; Shrink, a charismatic hyena; Salt, a matriarchal humpback whale; and Slavc, a European wolf. Juxtaposing these stories with those of rambunctious high schoolers and naive young soldiers, it becomes clear that how adolescents confront their challenges will shape their adult destinies.
