Namibia's Harnas Wildlife Foundation was made possible when Marieta van der Merwe and her family, former wealthy cattle farmers, sold land to create a refuge for injured animals. This detailed exploration of the facility introduces Sam, the lion accidentally infected with AIDS at a vet clinic; Boerjke, a baboon with epilepsy and Down syndrome; and Savanna, the one-eyed lioness. Told with insight and humor by Harnas volunteer Barbara Bennett, this is also a portrait of Van der Merwe herself, who survived personal tragedy in the African Bush to become a caregiver and ambassador for Africa's imperiled wildlife.
