By the mid-20th century, it may have seemed that every possible material had been used to create art, but innovative artists found a new way of communicating by using light itself. Showcasing more than 20 dramatic light installations and sculptures from the 1960s to the present—pictured in 150 illustrations—the artists here include Dan Flavin, whose ethereal work was made from fluorescent tubes; Anthony McCall, creator of "solid light" projections that give light an almost tangible quality; Olafur Eliasson, who devises massive atmospheric environments; and Jenny Holzer, whose LED signs broadcast censored documents from the "war on terror."
