For her follow-up to The Year of Reading Proust, Phyllis Rose decided to read through a single shelf of fiction (in this case, authors alphabetized Leq to Les) at the New York Society Library. There she discovered Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time sitting beside stories of French Canadian farmers and California detectives, and from her finds she creates an original and generous portrait of the literary enterprise.
