In the wake of World War I and the German Revolution of November 1918, a group of artists, architects, and writers banded together to work toward a democratic society that would reflect the values of the Weimar constitution. Representing every modernist style of the period, the Novembergruppe included such artists as Otto Dix, Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, George Grosz, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Hannah Höch, and Piet Mondrian. Presenting over 140 works, this history offers new perspectives on the avant-garde artists of Weimar Germany and their attempts to create community within a culture that would soon fall victim to the Nazis' repressive ideology.
