Though Philip III (1578-1621) is often overlooked in favor of his father Philip II and his son Philip IV, he nonetheless presided over an era of crucial artistic development in Spain. Focusing on the careers of the mature El Greco and the young Velázquez, which bookend this period of resurgent court culture, this exhibit catalog also explores the works of less well known but talented artists who exerted a critical influence on Spanish painting in the wake of these two masters. Among the 160 color reproductions are works like Ribera's Sense of Taste, Rubens's Equestrian Portrait of the Duke of Lerma, El Greco's View of Toledo, and Old Woman Cooking Eggs from Velázquez.
