The bleak landscapes, the ominous rooms, the faint air of doom hanging over their occupants—not to mention the deliciously macabre wit—have always kept us coming back to the inky world of Edward Gorey. This exhibit catalog for Brandywine River Museum's major retrospective comes from Karen Wilkin, who is not only a curator, art critic, and expert on Gorey's work, she was also his friend, and she surveys his career with personal insight. Among the 184 plates are samples from his published books, theatrical sets and costume designs, and individual works (many unpublished before), along with sketches, illustrated letters, doodles, and musings.
