Graceful yet remarkably playful, intensely passionate, and hinting of divine transcendence, the poems of the Amarushataka ("One Hundred Poems of Amaru") offer glimpses into the many faces of erotic love. "A single stanza of the poet Amaru," declared a 9th century critic, "may provide the taste of love equal to what's found in whole volumes." Attributed to King Amaru of Kashmir (though later scholars believe it to be an anthology of many poets), it remains one of the finest collections of Sanskrit love poetry, and scholar Andrew Schelling wonderfully evokes the history and passion of 8th century India in his translation.
