Ambitious for its era and still a powerhouse today, Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 (Eroica) is performed here by conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, who also shine on Symphony No. 6 (Pastorale) and the Leonore Overture No. 3. Beethoven's underappreciated Choral Fantasy is performed by pianist Rudolf Serkin, backed by Seiji Ozawa, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Tanglewood Chorus.
