Fleeing East from the Nazis, more than a million Polish Jews ended up in the Soviet Union at early in the war. Mikhal Dekel's father and aunt were two of the 1,000 children who were further evacuated to Iran, where they were embraced by an ancient Persian-Jewish community. Months later, their caregivers escorted them via India to Mandatory Palestine, where they joined thousands of other refugees. Recovering this astonishing story, Dekel has gathered the testimonies of a Polish politician, a Russian oligarch, and an Uzbek descendent of Korean deportees, resulting in a history that reflects the worst and the best of humanity.
