More than 400 years ago, Captain John Smith became one of the first Europeans to explore the Chesapeake Bay, and his travels are now the basis for America's first official National Historic Water Trails. While recounting Smith's adventures and quoting from his journals, this multi-faceted tribute to the bay contains dozens of vivid color photographs of the waterway and the plants and animals that are sustained by it, alongside samples of period art from colonial times.
