As the Allies advanced into Germany in April 1945, General Patton's Third Army discovered the collections of the Berlin museums hidden in a salt mine 2100 feet underground. Placed in the care of Walter Farmer's "Monuments Men," the 202 artworks were sent to Washington for safekeeping, and later exhibited on a nationwide tour. While chronicling this interesting junction of art history, international relations, and political propaganda, this history also presents color images of works by such artists as Botticelli, Holbein, Vermeer, Rubens, Cranach, Van Eyck, Giorgione, Titian, and Watteau.
