Much as we may associate Paul Cézanne with his stunning paintings of the French countryside, he was also a masterful portraitist. Offering an excellent introduction to this important aspect of his work, Mary Tompkins Lewis focuses on 24 masterpieces in portraiture. Arranged chronologically and spanning five decades, featured images range from the artist's earliest surviving self-portrait dating from the 1860s to paintings depicting his wife Hortense, his son Paul, and the gardener at his house near Aix-en-Provence. Related works by Cézanne and his peers are also included, accompanied by photographs of some of the sitters for these works.
