Leaving his native Minnesota to study art in Europe, Adolf Dehn (1895-1968) later settled in Manhattan and never looked back. Chronicling the city in lithographs and watercolors, Dehn helped to establish the visual style of The New Yorker, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. In the images collected here—elegant and jaunty, realistic and stylized—Dehn captured the burlesque theaters, lively Harlem nightclubs, the impressive skyline, and busy harbor, with Manhattan's Central Park as the place he returned to again and again.
