American assemblage artist Joseph Cornell and Spanish Cubist Juan Gris may seem an unlikely pair, but from the early 1950s to the mid 60s, Cornell created 21 works in homage to Gris, whom he deemed a "warm fraternal spirit." Specifically, Cornell was inspired when he saw Gris's imposing 1914 collage The Man at the Café in the Janis Gallery in Manhattan in 1953, and in 2018 that work accompanied nearly a dozen of Cornell's Gris boxes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the exhibit "Birds of a Feather," uniting them for the first time. Illustrated with thirteen color plates, dozens of additional figures, and seven page-filling closeups, this catalog explores the cultural and emotional continuity between these major 20th century artists.
